Why Beginners Should Not Blog With WordPress

by Gagan on July 20, 2010

Recently I read an article on Why Beginners Should Blog With WordPress, I was a bit dissatisfied with that article so decided to write an opposite view i.e Why beginners should not blog with WordPress.

It needs some initial investment

Self-hosted WordPress requires your own hosting, setup and installation thus requires some initial investment. Most of the bloggers wish to start from zero investment so WordPress is not at all for beginners.

Not for all type of niche blogs

WordPress is not meant for all type of niche blogs, if you want to start a personal blog WordPress is not a good option to start with. So, WordPress it not meant for all type of niche blogs.

Requires technical knowledge to install and configure

If you are a real non savvy kind of person and want to start a blog then WordPress is not meant for you as it requires some basic technical skills to install WordPress.

Alternate to WordPress

If you are a beginner and want to start a blog I recommend you to go for Blogger.

  • It is the best blogging platform for beginners and very user friendly.
  • It has got a lot of features that WordPress has.
  • It has built in widgets to make a professional looking blog
  • Free to use and no need of any hosting bills

I am eager to know your views? Are you satisfied with Harsh’s article or with me?

I do not agree with this Gagan, one can create a blog on wordpress.com within a few easy steps and this is absolutely free. Well you have some limitations though (Like you cannot run any kind of ads, cannot add external plugins) but its not at all difficult. Just check out the this http://pradeepprabhu.wordpress.com , which I created using the same method. In fact creating a blog here is much more easier than doing one in blogger is what I feel.

Hi Pradeep,

Don’t you think Blogger is far better than Wordpress.com !!

There is no option to add new themes, and Blogger has got a lot of features than Wordpress.com !!
What do you say?

There is option of changing themes in wordpress.com, only thing is you cannot upload it separately, but you can use the large collection of themes from wordpress database. I agree we cannot add plugins other than provided by that particular theme. Also in terms of looks I feel WP blogs have a more appealing look than blogger blogs.

I too agree with you, for a pretty much newbie blogger it is not possible to invest on hosting and domains so probably going with Wordpress is a bad idea for them at that time

Well, if one has to start off, one can maybe use a small amount for hosting and use a free theme. Once you are in the game and making some money, you can buy a premium theme.

I would think that you would only need money for 1 year of hosting and see how it goes.

Over time, it will prove that the investment was worth it.

Alright, it is true that Blogger.com is better than wordpress.com, and for beginner, it might be a little costly and require a bit technical knowledge to install wordpress. But I don’t agree about other stuffs. Blogger.com is popular just because it’s free and accepts all kinds of javascript code. But if you judge it from all aspects, nothing can beat WordPress self-hosted.

WordPress is a million times better and user-friendlier than Blogger. Who says WordPress is not for all niche? I’ve seen millions of personal blogs powered by WordPress and you can create any kind of site (remember wordpress won best CMS award?) using it. Even you can build an e-commerce site using WordPress.

To add functionality, you can simply add plugins to wordpress from thousands of free plugins available in the wordpress repository. And if you play with code in WordPress, you can make an extraordinary site with unique design and one day you can even earn some penny with the experience you gain.

I’m sorry, this is my first read in this blog and I couldn’t agree with it at all.

Wordpress Vs. Blogger July 23, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Blogger is FAR more friendly for beginners than Wordpress. For example, I find the whole procedure for adding an image to a WP blog SHEER TORTURE compared to Blogger. Also, many of the admittedly-helpful widgets on WP either don’t work, don’t work on all themes, or require special set-ups. Not so on Blogger.

The downside of Blogger is that THEY CAN SHUT YOU DOWN, at any time, if they think you are running a “spam” blog, which could mean anything which succeeds commerically. Of course, free WP blogs are the same.

Best solution: Start on Blogger, but quickly use Bluehost or another host with C Panel, to frequently backup your free Blogger blog on your own domain WP blog. That way you don’t have to worry about being shut down!

I feel Blogger is for the casual blogger. If you are serious about blogging and want to make some income from it even, Wordpress is the way to go. I know I started from knowing nothing and slowly learned what it takes to blog with Wordpress. There is so much info out there for people willing to learn.

Great Points i agree with you my dear friend, I have the same experience with wordpress. The most frustrating is, Theme selection and the second most frustrating is- selection of the required plug-ins.
