Unlimited Hosting Truth : Internet Fraud Series Part 1

by Gagan on July 27, 2010

To attract new customers many web hosting companies uses a word “Unlimited”. They tell that they will give unlimited hosting and unlimited bandwidth for few dollars per month. New bloggers falls in the unlimited fraud trap, lets find out the truth of unlimited hosting.

Truth about Unlimited Bandwidth

  • I bought my first hosting and domain from Dreamhost at $10 per year with unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth. When I bought this hosting plan I had limited knowledge about it.
  • After 9-10 months, the traffic on my blog increased and I got an email from Dreamhost to upgrade my account as my blog was crossing the CPU usage limit line.
  • I asked them, from where do this CPU usage come, I was told that I”ll get unlimited space and bandwidth. They told me that my blog is using more than required CPU usage and other blogs hosted on my server may suffer due to this.
  • They did not listened to me and upgraded my account without asking me. At that stage I thought I could have explored about hosting terms before buying one.
  • Many web hosting companies do not tell that with unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth, they will give limited CPU quota.
  • As your website/blog will start getting huge traffic, you will be asked to upgrade your account and if you don’t then your hosting will be switched off.

Truth about Unlimited Hosting

Here is a task for you to check is your hosting plan really unlimited or not.

  • If you’re using Unlimited Shared Hosting plan, upload some big size files on your server.
  • Do it for 2-3 days regularly and in few days you will get an email from your hosting provider that due to increase in traffic your blog is crossing CPU usage, so please upgrade your account.

So, keep in mind one thing that the word unlimited practically does not exists, never get cheated by web hosting scams.

I recommend you, never ever go for free stuff. After you get this free hosting, you will face a lot of down time and difficulties. Believe me, this has happened to my friend who got 2 years free hosting from Dreamhost.

They gave 2 years free hosting to those who had an account on GeoCities, and when Yahoo decided to close Geocities, Dreamhost announced to give free hosting for 2 years along with the domain to GeoCities users, my friend also moved to Dreamhost free hosting and suffered alot :( and later he moved to Hostgator :D

Very frank opinion Gagan. I have heard a lot of complaint about Dreamhost. I’m really afraid of the word “Unlimited Hosting”. lOl! :D

Yes, but if you are growing you can move to VPS that suits many bloggers . If you have some technical knowledge , you can go for Unmanaged VPS which cost around 7$/month .
About Indian host , there are people who goes only Indian hosting and whose center is available near their locality . But the major thing I see is , they are still selling limited service(BW) with huge price and also extra charges for setting up mail exchange for their domain .
Btw , I can be sure that for bloggers , the higher risk of their hosting account is either not recurring the bill or due to high CPU usage

Yes even I have fooled by a Indian based Company Called Manashosting. I suggest no one to opt them as webhost. I plan I opted for Rs.25/month, 25GB data transfer and 2.5GB disk space. The first catch in this was, you have to put their adsense codes on your home page both for search and content. The second one was, the worst customer care, they took around 10-12 days for activating my account, once activated, I need to raise ticket for each and everything like PHP was disabled, FTP was disabled, No fantastico installed, for each and everything I need to raise a ticket. The customer executives at their end always give false promises, but do nothing. So PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM IT.

Currently I am using a service called Zomex hosting, which is very good. I have been using it since Feb,2010 and I can say the server was down only 1-2 times, that too maximum for 10-15 minutes. Its cheap too. But again they don’t provide unlimited things. The customer support is excellent here, I have upgraded my account 2 times till now, and the upgrade was done within 10-15 minutes, after payment.

Udegbunam Chukwudi August 3, 2010 at 5:26 am

LOL. Where you using a cache plug-in when this CPU usage issue came up? Hosts like Hostgator are now installing cache plug-ins by default with every
new wordpress installation to reduce the load on their servers.

interesting. i recently bought shared hosting at hostgator and as you said the plan includes unlimited space and bandwidth. then i started thinking if this plan has everything., then why they are selling higher plans like VPS hosting… i just googled and founout that the bandwidth they are offering is limited to certain amount of visitors/month. now after reading this i know the ugly face.

Siva November 19, 2010 at 1:45 pm

To say precisely , Only CPU usage is considered while Account suspension .

There are not such thing as unlimited web hosting in this world. Everyone should know that. Why this package exist is because lot of people looking for this kind of hosting and search for it.
Unlimited Hosting still categorise as share hosting.
They still a limit just maybe they set a higher feature package among the share hosting only.
