Truth About .EDU and .GOV Backlinks: Google MythBuster Series Part 2

by Gagan on May 22, 2010

This is the second post of Google MythBuster Series, today I am going to tell you, does getting backlinks from .edu or .gov sites will help you in higher Google rankings or not. Its a common saying that to get high page rank to your website try getting backlinks from .gov or .edu sites and lets see how much true is it. Lets start:

Google treats all the links equally

  • Yes, Google gives equal attention to all the backlinks until and unless the link is relevant. By relevant link I mean to say that the backlink you’re getting should be from relevant post and relevant blog. Let me expain this with the help of an example:
  • Suppose, if you’ve a website on Mobile reviews and you’re getting a backlink from a .edu site that is about some official university Now, this backlink is not at all relevant as you’ve a site on mobile reviews and you are getting backlink from a university site. Such links does not hold any importance at all in Google search engine result page.
  • Now, if you’re getting a backlink from non related .gov or .edu site and another backlink from related .com site, Google will definitely give more importance to the backlink that you’re getting from a relevant .com site. Do not go for .edu or .gov backlinks instead work hard on writing original content.

So, now I will not be too focused to get backlinks from .edu
