Difference Between Underscore and Hyphen : Google’s View

by Gagan on June 28, 2010

My today’s article will tell you how Google treats underscores and hyphens. It is not a very long post but indeed a unique content to share. I hope you will like my little cute post :D

Google’s view on underscore and hyphen

  • Suppose, I’ve three words Creative Blogging Ideas. Now, if you use underscore format i.e Creative_Blogging_Ideas, Google will treat all the three words as one i.e CreativeBloggingIdeas
  • And if you hyphen format i.e Creative-Blogging-Ideas, Google will treat all the words separately.

This is the reason, hyphen is preferred over underscores in post URL.

Good tip. It’s also useful for SEO if you use the hyphen when naming images that you include in your posts. Same things apply, Google will see each word individually. Will make your keywords visible on Google Image Searches as well.

Hello, Thanks for this info. Can you provide a link or documentation that supports this? I believe it, and use hyphens in this manner very frequently, but, I’d like to see a post from Google or other authority that supports this.
