5 Quick Tips To Consider Before Installing A WordPress Plugin

by Gagan on May 5, 2010

As a WordPress user, you must be careful while installing plugins, and in my today’s article I am going to tell you about few things you must keep in mind before installing any WordPress plugin. This will help you in playing safe with WordPress. Lets start :

wordpress-plugins

Choose the best one

Few days back I wrote a guest post on 8 Great Plugins To Track WordPress Stats, now in that list all the plugins are quite similar to each other, so always choose that plugin that you think suits your need and fits you best.

Explore

Before start installing any plugin, explore it a bit, read reviews about that plugin on different blogs and if you get a positive result then only move ahead. Because there are many bad coded plugins also that can harm your blog. So, exploring is must.

Should be SEO friendly

Before installing any plugin, make sure it does not hurt your search engine rankings. Read the whole article by Kelvin on BloggingTips, he explains in detail how a bad coded plugin can hamper your search engine rankings.

Check compatibility

Before installing any plugin make sure it is compatible with your current WordPress version.

Backup

One of the most important factor to consider, always take a backup of your plugins folder before installing a new one. If anything goes wrong you can easily restore your blog. You can use any FTP program to backup plugins folder.

Note : To backup plugins folder, log into any FTP program, open wp-content folder and download Plugins folder. Simple.

Note : If you do not know how to install a plugin, read my article on How To Install A WordPress Plugin.

These are all great tips! I would like to suggest another one though. See if there is a way to get a desired effect without the use of a plugin. There are tutorials all over the internet to help out.

Another important tip is to consider your wordpress plug-ins before updating wordpress. If your plug-ins are necessary for the optimal functioning of your blog, DO NOT UPDATE until, you’re sure that plug-in is compatible with the new wordpress version.

Thats the problem with WP plugins, either they will be incompatible with the latest versions or they won’t be working. Its so hard to find a fool proof WP plugin.
